Crafting Utopia: collective creativity, collaborative practice

Writing is often a solitary pursuit, but utopia and its opposite, dystopia, are necessarily collective experiences. How, then, does one begin to write utopia? Can we tease apart this tension between the individual and the collective in our own writing practices? How can we create texts which are polyvocal and expansive? What new modes can we generate when writing not as a singular author but as a group, encompassing a variety of desires and methods?

In this workshop hosted by Brighton Feminist Science Fiction Bookclub, we will experiment with collaborative practices of writing, editing, and storytelling as tools to explore utopia. Taking inspiration from classic feminist sci-fi texts such as Marge Piercy’s Woman on the Edge of Time and Ursula Le Guin’s The Dispossessed, and drawing upon Donna Haraway’s invitation to engage in sym-poeisis or ‘making-with’, we will engage with different forms of collective writing, to create stories, collage, poetry and prose linked to the theme of utopia.

This workshop is open to all skill levels and writers and creators in any medium. There will be some individual writing prompts but much of the workshop will involve both small- and larger-group participation.
